SAG HARBOR CAPTAIN’S HOUSE
North Haven, NY
Originally built by a whaling captain in 1843, this historic estate underwent a meticulous restoration and expansion, with every detail carefully considered to honor its past while enhancing it for modern living. Preserving the property’s mature trees was a top priority, allowing the landscape to retain its storied character. The homeowner, an avid swimmer, envisioned a 25-meter lap pool seamlessly integrated into the site. A vegetable and herb garden was crafted using reclaimed materials from the property, including locust timbers, locally made bricks, and wrought iron fencing with granite posts, grounding the design in authenticity. An expansive lawn leading to the harbor was partially transformed into a native meadow, enriched with grasses and perennials to filter runoff before it reaches the water while also providing vital habitat for wildlife and pollinators. This project is a testament to the beauty of balancing preservation, sustainability, and luxury.
